Developing Creative, Well-rounded Individuals

Encouragement is given to help children develop and display self-confidence, intellectual curiosity, creativity, moral strength, and leadership ability. Students learn best in a happy, nurturing atmosphere which encourages individual expression and independence of thought and teaches self-discipline, responsibility, and respect for others.

To meet our high academic standards, our middle school has an outstanding faculty and the following curriculum is offered in social small classes. The program allows students to work with teachers who are experts in their fields while stressing the importance of a strong foundation in the basic tenets of learning and an appreciation for the arts.

Ashley Academy believes that parents are an integral part of the learning process, so we solicit their support and participation whenever possible. Close communication between home and school is encouraged, and teachers are readily available for conferences.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Ashley schedules language arts to accommodate grammar, creative writing, literature, vocabulary and spelling. Classes focus on the development of skills for effective communication and critical thinking in a variety of styles and settings. Literature encompasses the work of major American and English authors, as well as our very own Ashley students. Public speaking, monthly book reports, poetry, storytelling, research and writing skills, and extensive vocabulary building are important components of the courses offered.

Students review and expand mathematical concepts and operations each year. Depending on readiness and teacher recommendation, pre-algebra is offered as early as 6th grade. Problem solving, mental math, and “real life” application are all part of the program. Some students have completed levels as high as Algebra I, Algebra II, or Geometry upon entering high school.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The following curriculum is offered in social studies: Ancient Civilizations and Medieval History, World History, Tennessee History, U.S. History, and World Geography. Students participate in a wide variety of interesting and thought-provoking projects including the construction of models and dioramas, developing and acting in mock historic events, and in making individual in-depth which result in written research papers, artistic projects, and oral presentations.

Ashley students study challenge level life, earth, and physical sciences. Scientific concepts and processes are explored through hands-on acitivities, creative problem solving, and the use of technology within the context of national and global studies. Field trips are used to reinforce classroom instruction and promote interest in science related careers. All middle school students participate in our annual science fair.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Ashley offers 2 languages – French and Spanish. All students participate in one language of their choice. Classes provide instruction in listening, understanding, reading, speaking, and writing. The understanding and appreciation of foreign cultures and people is an integral part of each course. Parents are asked to encourage their child to continue the same foreign language to develop a firm foundation for language study at a higher level.

ART

The art program provides experiences in art history, art appreciation, and the use of various art media. The curriculum encourages Iearning through hands-on activities, discussions, original work, and a variety of visual materials. The goals of the art program are to acquaint students with a variety of art concepts and themes, to encourage experimentation in various media, and to promote understanding and appreciation for art in general.

MUSIC

The music curriculum is designed to teach students fundamental principles and skills. lnstrument design and function, notation, music history, singing and movement are elements of the program. The course expands the student’s knowledge and understanding of music by discussing music from different time periods and parts of the world and different styles. One evening performance is scheduled during the year and students are encouraged to participate.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Our physical education program emphasizes sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play. Students acquire basic fundamental skills, knowledge of games and their rules, and positive attitudes through a variety of physical activities. Manipulative skills, locomotor skills, cardiovascular fitness, body management, and social interaction are all part of the curriculum.

COMPUTER

Computer education is offered to all middle school students. Our computer lab has Dell computers and provides for a multi-level study of computer uses. In addition to learning proficient use of a word processor, all students must develop typing skills. Ashley has Internet access and each student has exposure and instruction on Internet usage.
