Ashley Academy was founded in 1979 to provide a challenging educational program to bright and gifted children. For over thirty years, Ashley Academy has maintained exemplary standards in the preschool through eighth grade levels. Organized as an independent, co-educational, private school, Ashley Academy promotes learning in an atmosphere that nurtures character, responsibility, and self-worth.

In order to fulfill this mission, our academic community emphasizes respect, responsibility, integrity, and the love of learning. Ashley Academy is committed to helping students develop their talents, interests, and character while cultivating intellectual curiosity. Small class sizes, hands-on learning experiences, a progressive curriculum, and an environment of caring enable Ashley Academy to excel in meeting the individual needs of each child enrolled here.
Educating the whole child. Classes and programs are designed to promote growth and achievement in intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development.
Respecting diversity and individuality. A strong emphasis is placed on appreciating the cultural richness of our school and world. Students are supported in self-discovery and as contributing members of their classes.
Providing a rich environment for learning. The curriculum and instruction methods are carefully chosen to include adequate time for choices, projects, cooperative and collaborative learning, immediate feedback, and mastery of problem-solving skills.
Implementing a team approach to educating children. The participation of parents, grandparents, students, and teachers is a vital component in the success of each child. Families play a crucial role in all parts of school life at Ashley Academy.
Ashley Academy’s school year consists of four forty-five day quarters, approximately nine weeks each. School day hours for preschool classes could be full-time (7:50 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.) or part-time (7:50 a.m. -1:00 p.m.) Kindergarten through eighth grade hours are 7:50 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. Students may arrive at the school starting at 7:30 a.m. In order to accommodate families who need child care services before and after the academic day, Ashley Academy offers an extended care program from 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. An additional cost is charged for these services.
The facility consists of five buildings that include 14 classrooms, a combination gymnasium/cafeteria, library, and administrative offices. The 2-acre campus is adjacent to a 22-acre city park that is available to the school for a variety of uses.
Administration, Faculty, and Board of Directors
The teacher-student ratio at Ashley Academy averages 1:8, with an enrollment capacity of 115. The faculty is composed of twenty full- and part-time dedicated professional educators, many of whom have earned graduate degrees. All teachers meet or exceed the Tennessee Department of Education Certification standards. The school also meets all state academic and safety requirements, and is annually approved by the Tennessee State Department of Education.
The Headmaster/Principal oversees all matters of the school and faculty. A Board of Directors also governs the school and is responsible for selecting the Headmaster. Members constitute a range of individuals within the community and school with representation from academic, financial, legal and medical entities as well as parents of Ashley Academy students.
Ashley Academy Graduates’ Schools & Colleges
Ashley Academy students have continued their education regional public and private schools and well-known preparatory schools. Baylor, The Hill School, Choate, and Webb School are a few examples of institutions where our graduates have been accepted and attended. After high school graduation, Ashley Academy students have enrolled in some of the top colleges in the nation, including Vanderbilt, Stanford, Wellesley, Oberlin, Carnegie-Mellon, University of Virginia, Williams, Agnes Scott, Dartmouth, Freed-Hardeman, Rollins, Bob Jones University, Emory, David Lipscomb, United States Naval Academy, Citadel, East Tennessee State University, University of Tennessee, Duke, Harvard, Princeton, and Milligan College. The educational foundation gained at Ashley Academy has prepared our students for successful college experiences and careers.
The leaders of Ashley Academy believe that parents are an integral part of the learning process. Family support and participation are encouraged whenever possible. Parental involvement is seen inside the classroom through lectures and demonstrations, fundraising events, and in the governance of the school. The inclusion of parents is key to the sense of community fostered at Ashley Academy.
